Valentine's Day in the 21st Century

Valentine's Day is a traditional holiday celebrated in North
America, usually on the 14th of February.

It's a day where people express their love by sending
valentine flowers, gifts and chocolates.

The day became associated with romantic love
in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtley love flourished. Various Christian martyrs were name Valentine.

In 1969 the Catholic Church recognised 11
Valentine's Day as to remember them. 3 Valentine's are honoured on this day. Valentine of Rome, Valentine of Terni & another Valentine from Africa.

All of them were either martyred or killed and none of these cases present itself with any romantic elements to suggest how today's valentine's day ended up with its own unique
tradtition.

The first recorded association of Valentine's Day was by this Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote Parlement of Foules (1382).

For this was on seynt Volantynys day.
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese [choose] his make [mate].

This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia.

Now to my version of Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is a day where single fools would fork out as much as RM 30 to buy a bud of rose (one stem) for a girl,maybe 2, 3 i don't know ;

~ anonymously
~ randomly
~ who doesn't like him
~ who thinks she likes him
~ who just wants to impress her with the most expensive stuff

Now there're also chocolate boxes that go for that much, cards that cost twice as much and teddy fluffy teddy bears that looks so cute & cost heaps that come from Thailand or Indonesia. Teens today are misled and are easily corrupted by the message Valentine's Day offers.

If guys, you really like this girl very much and you wish to give her something to get her attention, why give her a rose where florists import them?

Why not plant your own? Or use other flowers you have?

Why give chocolate boxes wrapped by other people?

Why buy cards that are printed with words not even written by your heart or your head?

Why buy teddy bears only on Valentine's Day when there are 364 other days to buy it...even at a cheaper price!!

Oh ya that's right. It doesn't matter right, as long as you have the money, anything also can. A bud don't last a week. Chocolate boxes? In the front and out the back with consolations on the face (pimple) and waist (fat). Cards? Tucked somewhere in between text books. Teddy Bears? Will last until the next one arrives.

Many shops owners, business people, salesperson and restaurants use Valentine's Day as a tool of opportunity to take advantage by hiking price up.

Any gift considered to be a worthy of 'valentino' is doubled.

The true meaning of this day comes from the heart. It does not come from being praise by friends or your admirers' friends for being brave and courageous.

It comes with sincerity and honesty and not from showing off which gifts you can buy best. It comes with respect and love and not action and words.

How do it know this? Because i have an understanding girlfriend who knows the meaning of Valentine's Day and does not expect the most expensive nor cutest gifts from me. She has my heart and so do i. Everyday is our Valentine.
